Your smile reflects your overall health and confidence. However, some dental issues can dampen your oral well-being, from tooth decay and gum disease to bad breath and teeth sensitivity. But worry not! We at London Dental House have uncovered the six most common dental problems and provided you with practical tips to maintain a healthy mouth.

Tooth decay

Tooth decay is one of the most common dental problems and occurs when bacteria form a film on the surface of your teeth. This film is known as plaque, which produces acids from the sugars in food and eats away at your enamel. The acids damage the outer layer of the tooth, after which they start working on the softer dentin layer beneath the enamel.

It can lead to cavities and toothaches, which must be addressed. A dentist will assess the extent of your tooth decay and recommend the most appropriate treatment. This may include fillings, crown, or a root canal

Tooth decay can be prevented with regular brushing and flossing. Regular checkups at a dental office will also help prevent tooth decay.

Gum disease

Plaque buildup causes this. Symptoms include red, swollen, or bleeding gums. Bad breath and sensitive teeth may also be signs of gum disease.

A poor oral hygiene routine can lead to gum disease and crooked teeth that are hard to brush correctly. Many patients do not notice this problem because gingivitis can be painless. Therefore, regular dental checkups are essential. A professional cleaning from our dentist can treat this condition, and proper brushing and flossing will prevent gingivitis from returning.

Periodontitis

If left untreated, gingivitis can become a more severe form of gum disease called periodontitis. It occurs when pockets in the gum become infected and can damage the bone and tissue that hold the tooth. Periodontitis is a serious issue that can lead to shrinking and receding gums, the loss of permanent teeth, persistent bad breath, and a change in bite.

You may be given topical antibiotics to treat this infection or need to visit a gum disease specialist.

Bad breath

This is a common and very distressing dental problem. Several factors, including poor oral hygiene, a dry mouth, medication or acid reflux, can cause it. Some foods can also cause bad breath. A dentist will perform a complete assessment to prescribe the treatment.

Sensitive teeth

Tooth sensitivity to hot and cold foods and beverages can occur when the enamel wears away and dentin is exposed. Tooth decay, gum disease, root infection, a cracked or broken tooth, receding gums, and worn-down crowns or fillings can also cause this kind of sensitivity.

Cracked or broken teeth

Chewing hard foods and grinding your teeth while you sleep can cause cracked or broken teeth. This will cause you pain and discomfort; a dentist must examine the issue immediately. Depending on the severity of the damage, they may recommend a crown, veneers, or a tooth-coloured filling.
